The American Dream isn’t a new idea, but for a long time, it’s been a static concept.
Coined by James Truslow Adams in his 1931 book The Epic of America, the American Dream is often defined by possibility. It was characterized by upward mobility, freedom, and equality for all people.
For nearly a century, these qualities were embodied by a single milestone: homeownership.
It was the surest sign that you had “made it.” The affordable mortgage, white picket fence, and community roots were emblematic of stability.
Today, that definition is necessarily changing, and homeownership isn’t the cornerstone it once was. In fact, today’s American Dream is more often defined by flexibility, convenience, and community.
Recently, we sat down with residents at our Winder Retreat community to hear what matters most to them right now. Captured in the EverResi™ documentary short, At the Table, these unscripted conversations showed us exactly what they value most.
Here is what their American Dream looks like.
Stability and Joy During Life’s Transitions
Life rarely goes exactly as planned. Unexpected life events are constantly redirecting our paths and reshaping our needs. Career changes, shifting family dynamics, or unforeseen financial shifts can change where and how we can live.
In these moments, finding a safe, comfortable place to land is essential.
For one single mother at Winder, renting a single-family home provided crucial stability during a painful transition.
“Divorce rocked our world because we had to move, and who wants to move out of their home?” Naydalis Linares recalls. “My kids grew up there, so that was very difficult. This gave me the opportunity to, even though I was leaving my family home, I could still provide for my kids a home.”
For many modern renters, the real dream doesn’t have to do with owning a property. They want a place that accommodates life’s transitions and provides the stability their families need and deserve.
It’s about having a neighborhood where kids can just be kids, where movie nights, playing outside, and feeling safe are a given.
Independence, Proximity, and Peace of Mind
Stable housing is a necessity, but our housing needs often evolve with our lives. A starter home works when you’re single, but feels smaller as your family grows. When parents become empty nesters, that big house can become a burden to maintain.
Sometimes, house size doesn’t matter at all. We just want to be close to the people we love without sacrificing our own personal autonomy.
For example, following profound personal losses, one Winder resident found herself in urgent need to relocate from New Jersey back home to Georgia to be near her family. Faced with an expensive housing market that made buying prohibitive, she needed a solution that offered affordability and independence.
“It set me up to be able to still live independently and be able to take care of myself without having to rely on other people and without having to be concerned with any of the stereotypical things that come about when you have home ownership,” Winder resident Melissa Hester explains.
Built-to-rent communities remove the maintenance burden and financial strain of a traditional mortgage, so residents can focus their energy on healing, enjoying their families, and writing their next chapter on their own terms.
The Power of Choice in Modern Housing
There is a growing sentiment that the traditional path of buying a home is not a one-size-fits-all mandate. The foundation of the American Dream has always been freedom, and that includes the freedom to choose the housing options that work best for you.
People deserve the right to decide how they want to live, free from societal or governmental pressures that dictate that success looks only like homeownership.
“We should have choices,” Melissa Hester said, “We should have the right to decide if we want to purchase a home, if we want to rent a home, if we want to rent an apartment, if we want to rent a townhouse, if we want to buy a piece of property and stick a mobile home on it.”
Homes with Life in Mind
The stories from our Winder residents validate what we believe about housing: It is essential, it must be flexible, and it shouldn’t be defined exclusively by a mortgage.
Whether you are navigating a major transition, seeking proximity to loved ones, or simply craving the freedom of choice, your home should support your unique journey. It should adapt to your needs, rather than the other way around.
We are here to provide the space, the stability, and the choice you need to focus on what matters most. As we look ahead, we are continuing to roll out new community engagement initiatives and enhanced neighborhood amenities designed to make life at Winder even more connected and convenient.
